Bringing augmented reality to environmental education

Building Augmented Reality (AR) into education programs will impact how we teach our kids. Incorporating AR will change many aspects of studying. AR will make classes more engaging and fun. We know that creativity and interaction is key to successful learning processes. To entice more students to undertake STEM, we need to introduce students to new ways of learning. Augmented Reality overlays a digital image or animation onto your view of the real world, unlike Virtual Reality which is a completely computer-generated environment.

Augmented Reality in education

Smartphones are now used by more and more young people to access social media, play games and connect to the world. And, while kids use smartphones and tablets to connect and play, it is important that they also start to use these devices more for study and learning. Augmented Reality starts to open up exciting ways for kids to learn straight from their mobile device. Despite Augmented Reality now being used in many areas to better integrate processes and communication, AR in education is still in its infancy. Though possibilities of AR in teaching/studying are great, there is more work to be done to better integrate AR into school programs. Environmental education targeting primary school kids provides the optimum platform to test and roll out AR programs. The virtually unlimited supply of educational material available to be developed into AR applications should fast-track the integration into schools.

Areas in environmental education that would be ideal for AR integration

Environmental education provides a perfect platform to introduce kids to AR. The possibilities are endless and can open the way for more interactive learning
  • Insects and Bugs
  • Natural processes
  • Pollution
  • Foodwebs
